Abidjan, Senegal Urban Roads show how expanding transport infrastructure can change urban tree cover, roadside conditions, and the experience of car travel.

How Abidjan and Senegal’s Expanding Roads Are Changing Urban Tree Cover and Car Travel

Road expansion is reshaping major West African cities as governments respond to population growth, congestion, and rising mobility demands. Abidjan in Ivory Coast is undergoing major transport development, while Senegal is also seeing continued investment and urban expansion around Dakar. These changes can improve connections for motorists, but they can also affect roadside vegetation and urban green spaces.

The relationship between Abidjan Senegal Urban Roads and environmental conditions is therefore becoming increasingly relevant. New highways, interchanges, drainage systems, and public transport corridors can change the amount of land available for trees, while better-designed infrastructure can also create opportunities for new landscaping

Abidjan’s Road Development Is Accelerating

Abidjan is currently implementing several major mobility projects. The government’s sustainable and integrated urban mobility programme includes plans for 164 kilometres of BRT lines and 65 kilometres of metro lines, alongside improvements to roads, drainage, sidewalks and cycling infrastructure.

Road projects are also being developed to increase traffic capacity. A 2026 African Development Bank project document describes plans to transform 88 kilometres of roads threatened by saturation into urban highways, while also extending Latrille Boulevard and developing the northern section of the Y4 ring road.

For motorists, these projects could change daily routes, journey times and traffic patterns. However, construction also creates an opportunity to consider how much greenery should remain alongside expanding roads.

What Road Expansion Means for Tree Cover

Major road construction requires space for carriageways, junctions, drainage, pedestrian facilities and utility networks. In some locations, this can mean removing existing vegetation.

Abidjan already has an example of how road infrastructure and greenery can coexist. Research examining 10 road interchanges in the city recorded 1,767 tree stems belonging to 42 species. The study also recommended greater diversity of indigenous species in future urban greening projects.

This shows that road infrastructure does not necessarily have to create completely bare corridors. Proper landscaping can provide trees around interchanges, medians, and other suitable spaces without compromising road safety.

Senegal Faces Similar Urban Pressures

Senegal provides another useful West African comparison. Dakar has experienced substantial urban expansion, with studies examining changes in vegetation cover around major green areas and infrastructure corridors.

One recent study found that vegetation cover across three major green spaces in Dakar declined between 1990 and 2022, with road infrastructure among the forms of development associated with changes to these areas.

The experience of Senegal highlights a wider challenge for Abidjan Senegal Urban Roads: cities need additional transport capacity while also protecting the green spaces that contribute to urban environmental quality.

Why Trees Matter to Car Travel

Urban trees are not simply decorative features. Roadside vegetation can provide shade for pedestrians and vehicles, contribute to cooler local environments and form part of broader stormwater-management strategies.

For drivers, this can make a noticeable difference during hot conditions or when traffic becomes slow. A shaded road corridor can also feel more comfortable than a completely exposed stretch of asphalt and concrete.

At the same time, trees must be positioned carefully. Poorly placed vegetation can obstruct signs, reduce visibility at intersections, or create hazards if branches fall onto roads. Urban road planning therefore needs to balance greenery with safety requirements.

Better Roads Can Change Driving Patterns

The expansion of Abidjan Senegal Urban Roads can also influence where and how motorists travel. New interchanges and higher-capacity routes can redistribute traffic, while public transport projects may provide alternatives to private cars.

In Abidjan, current mobility planning includes BRT, metro, lagoon transport and intelligent transport systems, showing that road expansion is increasingly being considered alongside other forms of urban mobility.

For car owners, changing road layouts make route planning increasingly important. Construction zones, temporary diversions and new junction arrangements can alter familiar journeys.

Drivers can also use platforms such as AfriCarGroup Auto24 to explore vehicles suited to changing urban driving conditions.

Planning Greener Roads for Ivory Coast and Senegal

The development of Abidjan Senegal Urban Roads demonstrates why transportation and ecology should be considered together. Abidjan’s current projects include drainage, sidewalk,s and cycling infrastructure, creating opportunities to integrate suitable vegetation into new and upgraded corridors.

Senegal can also provide useful lessons as Dakar continues managing the relationship between roads, urban development and green areas.

For both countries, future road projects can consider tree preservation, replacement planting, appropriate native species, and carefully designed roadside landscaping. These measures can help maintain a greener urban environment while allowing transport infrastructure to expand.

Conclusion

The expansion of Abidjan Senegal Urban Roads reflects a broader transformation taking place across West African cities. Abidjan is investing heavily in roads and integrated mobility, while Senegal faces similar pressures around Dakar.

For motorists, better roads can improve connectivity and traffic movement, but the environmental side of road development also matters. Protecting existing trees and incorporating suitable greenery into new infrastructure can help create urban roads that support mobility without unnecessarily reducing valuable green space.

How should Ivory Coast and Senegal balance road expansion with urban tree protection? Would you prefer wider roads with less greenery or greener roads designed around existing trees? Share your thoughts in the comments.
